Until the 1980’s, the big US airline Northwest called itself Northwest Orient because it was – next to Pan Am – the second airline licensed to service the important transpacific routes. When, in 1948, the East Asian routes were passed from the DC-4 to the “Stratocruiser” there was a quantum leap in terms of travel comfort. In 1959 the 377 fleet was finally taken out of service. The big Boeing offered a lot of space and even a bar for its passengers, but was very difficult to fly.
