This surveillance aircraft, used for both military and civil duties, uses the Boeing 707- 300B airframe. The abbreviation AWACS stands for “Airborne Warning and Control System”. They are designed to detect aggressors at very low altitudes and on the ground with the enormous gyrating radar dome on the fuselage. 18 of these early warning airplanes are under the NATO’s command in Europe, including LX-N 90459, a new casting now added to the Wings collection.
